Buying The Right Infant Car Seat
by: Gretchen McClure
With so many infant car seats out there, which one is the
best? When you have a newborn there are so many things to do, but
one of the most important things is getting the right car seat for
your infant.
It will help protect your baby in any vehicle, and you won't be
able to leave the hospital with your child if you don't have one
installed in your car.
They're not difficult to find, and they don’t have to be overly
expensive, but you do need to get the right one. Using the wrong
type of car seat for your baby could result in injury or death in
an accident - even if it's a minor accident.
Be sure to buy a car seat that is designed for babies, not one
that older children can use. It should have a harness that
carefully but firmly holds your child in place. And it should
provide good head protection.
Buy the best one you can find. Don’t buy a used one, even if it
appears to be in great condition. There could be hidden flaws you
can’t see (below the surface) that might come back to haunt you.
It's just too risky.
When my daughter was an infant, I used a car seat that many
people choose. The seat has a base that's installed in the car with
the seatbelts, but has a top part that is detachable.
This type of seat allows you to carry your sleeping baby in and
out of the house and get them in and out of the car seat without
jarring them too much or waking them up.
Anyone with a new baby will tell you that this alone is a true
blessing. As long as the detachable part of the seat hooks in
securely and firmly, these are not only convenient, but very safe
as well.
One thing people don’t often consider when it comes to an infant
car seat is identification. If you're in an accident, you want to
be sure that doctors have all the information they need about your
child. You can do this by attaching information to their car
seat.
There are special stickers available for this purpose, but you
can do it any way you want. Include names, addresses, phone
numbers, and any special medical considerations.
If you're unconscious, the paramedics will find this information
on the seat and your child can be treated at once, or family
members can be called and alerted to the situation.
Do your research and get the best infant car seat possible for
your baby. The investment will be a small price to pay for their
safety.
